Management Team

Chris Smith

Chris Smith, Founder & CEO

Chris is a visionary, innovating and advancing location technology to foster new ways for people to experience, understand and connect with the world around them. The Pacific Ocean separates Chris's two unique hometowns, splitting his time for many years between two of the most beautiful places in the world, Seattle, Washington and Wellington, New Zealand.

Chris began his career at Microsoft developing web applications which allowed him to learn from several experts and sparked his desire to explore the world of tech and business as an entrepreneur.

While attending Victoria University to study International Business and Marketing, Chris launched his first startup, Dash Tickets, an online ticketing company. Dash quickly became one of the largest New Zealand based ticketing companies., selling over a million tickets in its first 3 years. In 2011, Dash was sold to Ministry of Sound.

In 2012, Chris founded STQRY, an interactive mobile storytelling platform which is now being used at over 400 culture and arts organizations internationally to enhance visitor experiences. As STQRY advanced its platform, Chris lead the team to innovate in the location technology and beacon space, creating multiple products that could benefit a wide range of businesses such as hospitals and airports by improving their customer experience.

In 2015 Chris launched the parent company Area360, opened up a headquarters in Seattle and partnered with Madrona Venture Group for a series A round of funding that is supporting exponential growth for the company. Chris's passions lie in his family, aviation (he is a licensed pilot), and a robust Lego collection.

Andrew Reid

Andrew Reid, Chief Technology Officer

Andrew excels at leading teams operating in complex and fast-paced technical environments. He has a particular passion for challenges requiring algorithmic solutions, and for a design led approach to meeting customer needs.

After completing a PhD in coding theory, Andrew quickly moved into the software space and joined in-car GPS navigation darling Navman in 2004. His first task was to re-write their route-finding algorithms, and from there he transitioned into technical leadership positions finishing up first as Development Manager for the navigation algorithms team and then for the wider in-car GPS software and data team. Following acquisition by Brunswick the Navman in-car division’s revenue peaked at over $100M before MiTAC International subsequently acquired the business.

In 2011 Andrew joined Zeacom, a global provider of contact center solutions and early mover in the Lync/SfB contact center space. He led their growing development team, with responsibility for technical strategy and execution. Team achievements included a successful acquisition by Enghouse, a complete refresh of the client GUI and substantial growth in the Lync/SfB customer base.

Andrew joined STQRY in 2015 and is based in Wellington, New Zealand, with the development team. Andrew has been captivated by technology since the beginning, cutting his teeth programming on a Commodore 64 and designing, building, and racing solar-powered model cars as a teenager. Nowadays, when not kept busy by work and his young family, he enjoys reading and yoga, and feeds his design passion with an ever-expanding stockpile of Lego.

Dave Martine

Dave Martine, Chief Operating Officer

Dave Martine is an experienced leader and entrepreneur. Throughout his career he has brought his enthusiasm and passion to both startups and Fortune 500 companies, building and managing teams to work on a complex mix of operations, logistics, customer service, and supply chain functions.

He is a results oriented, senior executive for top-tier organizations including Nordstrom, Onlineshoes.com, CarDomain Network, and Bag Borrow or Steal. Most recently Dave was the GM of Shoes.com and was responsible for leading and managing the high growth $200m business and its employees.

Dave is a native of the Pacific Northwest and when he isn’t helping his wife chase after his 3 daughters on the weekend you may see him out hiking with his trusty black lab Tater Tot.

Nathan J Peterson

Nathan J Peterson, Vice President of Global Marketing

Nathan is an entrepreneurial and energetic marketing and business development leader who builds and executes award winning programs that drive business results. Nathan built his first successful startup shortly after graduating from the University of Washington in 2008. After selling his shares in the company, he went to work for Microsoft until 2011 when he was recruited to build and grow T-Mobile's social media marketing and communications platform.

During his tenure with team Magenta, Nathan grew the program to new heights, being named the top company in social media marketing by JD Power in 2013. Nathan pioneered a strategic partnership with Facebook that lead to a break through ROI case study called "Mobile Outcome Measurement" which was featured at AdWeek2013. In January of 2014, Nathan made a progressive and entrepreneurial decision to join the emerging cannabis industry as the head of marketing for Privateer Holdings, the first private equity firm in the space.

During his tenure, the company (Leafly) grew revenue 240%, increased app downloads by 2M, and won three major awards for marketing and communications, including GeekWire's 2014 App of the Year, and a Silver Anvil Award for the first ever full page cannabis ad placed in the New York Times, a global story that reached nearly 400 million people. Chris Smith and Nathan had spent years working together on side entrepreneurial plans and in 2015 Chris recruited Nathan to build a and run a world class marketing team for Area360. Nathan is a basketball junkie, mountain biking wannabe, and enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Jennifer Smith

Jennifer Smith, Vice President of Global Sales

Jennifer has been an integral member of STQRY since it’s launch in 2012 and has continued to help grow and form the business that is now headed by our parent company, Area360. Jennifer brings over 25 years of experience in sales and management, having previously helped other young businesses grow into the large corporations that they are today.

Fresh out of university in California, she worked with LEXIS/NEXIS, starting with providing training to lawyers on how to use the emerging technology, then moving into marketing, and then on to management. From there, she went to work with an innovative education company, Performance Learning Systems, that provides powerful higher-education courses for teachers. She managed the Western Region operations for years, expanding the business across the west coast and into Canada.

From education she jumped into an opportunity to work in the jewelry industry as a national account executive for Simon Golub & Sons. She helped grow the new international sales division from it’s inception to an over $120million business and expanded team. Jennifer feels fortunate to be able to apply her learnings with the incredible Area360 team to continue our upward growth into new and exciting areas. She is energized in environments where curiosity reigns, where every person makes a difference and affects change, where people DO, where the sky’s the limit!

Jen likes to disappear occasionally to wander the wild outdoors, to escape to a yoga class, or to explore new cultures and places with her crew of fabulous family and friends.
